Highway robbers loot mobile phones worth nine million

Three unidentified robbers, armed with a sharp weapons, looted 125 packages carrying mobile phones, totally valued at Rs90 lakh. They allegedly halted a tempo at Kameshet in the wee hours of Tuesday on the old Pune - Mumbai highway and committed the crime. The packages had been loaded into the tempo at the Kanhe Phata area and were to go to Mumbai. The entire operation spanned over several minutes, and the robbers smoothly executed the robbery with the cops being clueless to the entire operation.

A complaint in this regard has been lodged at the Wadgaon Maval police station by the tempo driver Arvind Bhagwan Sonawane (27) of Sanaswadi, Shikrapur on Tuesday morning.

 

According to the police, Sonawane loaded 125 packages containing mobile phones in the tempo on Monday night, and was proceeding towards Mumbai in the wee hours of Tuesday. When the tempo reached the Kamsheth area near Indrayani Bridge, the robbers blocked his route. They forced him out of the tempo to an isolated spot in the Kanhe Phata area.

 

Speaking to dna, police inspector Vijay Jadhav of Wadgaon Maval police station who is probing the case said, "The robbers took Sonawane into an isolated area, tied him with ropes, gagged him and left him there. Thereafter, they went towards the tempo and unloaded the packages and later loaded the material into a tempo that they had brought along with them and disappeared. The scared driver managed to disengage himself and escaped after nearly 1.5 hours. He later took help from the locals to contact his owner and later they approached us on Tuesday morning."

 

After the incident, the a team from the Wadgaon Maval police station went to the spot and inquired into the area, but did not get any useful leads. Jadhav said, "We suspect that an insider might have given a tip-off to the robbers and thus they targeted the tempo. With this in mind, we are questioning employees who are working at the godown from there the tempo was loaded."

 

Jadhav said that they are probing the case by using technology and is of the opinion that they will arrest the robbers soon. "We are on right track and will arrest the robbers soon as we are working on certain clues. At this juncture, we cant give more details as our investigations are still on," he added.
