Taking cognisance o illegal puncturing of dividers on highways which have resulted in fatal accidents, the Pune rural police have decided to get tough against owners of dhabas, hotels, beer bars, petrol pumps and hospitals located on the highways.

Concerned over the rise in fatal road accidents, the top brass of Pune rural police have decided to inspect the Pune-Ahmednagar, Pune-Mumbai, Pune-Solapur, Pune-Satara and Pune-Nashik highways.

The police are also contemplating registering cases under section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, against those owners of dhabas, hotels, beers bars, petrol pumps and hospitals located along the highways in the district that puncture the dividers.

Additional superintendent of police (Pune rural) Vijaykumar Magar told dna, “The stretch from Wagholi to Ranjangaon on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway and Chakan on the Pune-Nashik highways are the most affected zones, where the maximum numbed of punctures have been identified.”

Some of the owners and the staff of these commercial establishments create the punctures on the dividers so that the cars and other vehicles can reach these outlets without taking much time.

According to the traffic department officials, the number of fatal accidents increase during April, May and the monsoon season. An officer from the traffic department told dna, “The fatal accidents increase during April and May as several weddings take place in these two months. We have started taking action against vehicles used during wedding processions that violate the traffic rules in the district.”

A police official, requesting anonymity, told dna, “The rural police don’t have enough staff for traffic and this affects the work. Every police station has one or two constables for managing traffic. If the police station is situated on the highway, they have at the most three constables.’’

However, Magar claimed they have decided to allocate extra staff for the traffic department in the near future. He said, “We have decided to increase our strength in the traffic department in district.”
