Pune: The sexologists in the city are happy with their flourishing business, thanks to the rising trend of newly weds wishing to split up over unconsummated marriages. According to the doctors, the business for ‘honeymoon counselling’ has increased in the past couple of years.

“Lack of sex in a marriage can weaken the relationship between a couple. As a result, the partners seek for a divorce or they look for sexual relationships outside the marriage,” said Smita Joshi, marriage counsellor in the family court of the city.

In order to reduce divorce cases on the basis of sexual incompatibility, many marriage counsellors and divorce lawyers have joined with the city based sexologists for couple counselling on sex and physical relationships.
“Out of ten cases, six are due to the woman having vaginismus, a condition where the movements of vaginal muscles change from involuntary from voluntary. 95 per cent of these cases are psychological where the woman has a mental block and a negative knowledge of sex,” she said.
Unconsummated marriages more often seen in arranged marriages, where couples do not get much time to understand each other well enough.
Shashank Sane, a sexologist and sex counsellor said,

“Over 70 per cent of such cases are arranged marriages. Having met just once or twice, couples find it difficult to get intimate with each other. Therefore, there is a rise in honey moon phase sessions for newly weds where the couples are made to understand each other and are educated on the correct approaches right before they start their married life.”
