Even as the catchment areas of Khadakwasla system  comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon and Temghar dams received more rainfall as compared to last year, the water level in these dams has increased only marginally.

The four dams recorded a total of 689 mm rainfall this month. Yet the dams are holding 1.71 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet of water, which can fulfill the needs of the city for one month.

Last year, till June 14, these four dams were holding a total of 1.68 TMC water and the figure this year is 1.71 TMC water, including Khadakwasla (0.18 TMC), Panshet (1.49 TMC), Temghar (0.04 TMC) and Warasgaon does not have water.

Khadakwasla irrigation division executive engineer BB Lohar said, “At the arrival of monsoon, the land remain dry and rainwater percolates into the soil. The average rainfall that these dams received till now are around 200 mm. Only at least 250 mm rainfall for a longer period of time can cause the water to flow into dams and increase the water level. Pune city has a requirement of nearly 1.25 TMC water for one month and looking at the current water level, it can satisfy the city’s requirement for another month,” Lohar said.

City to get more rains in next 24Hrs

Rainfall activity is likely to improve over the next two days, say experts at India Meteorological Department(IMD), Pune. With a low pressure area being developed by the North-West monsoon winds around Chhattisgarh, most parts of Maharashtra are likely to receive rainfall in the coming days. Pune, which is experiencing partly overcast weather conditions, is also expected to see increase in rainfall in the next 24 hours or so. SB Gaonkar, scientist at IMD, Pune, said, “So far, the monsoon in Maharashtra has been normal. There has been rainfall activity reported at Vidarbha, Marathwada and Central Maharashtra regions.” He also added that heavy rains are expected in Konkan and Goa regions in the next two days. The monsoon had hit Kerala early this month and is slowly advancing north.
