Pre-monsoon rain lashed almost all parts of Pune city on Thursday evening and office-goers had a tough time reaching home. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 36 mm rain by 8.30 pm.

It was a humid day right from morning. The clouds gathered over the city making it a dark late afternoon.

It started raining at 5 pm in various parts of the city. After gathering momentum, heavy rain lashed the city for almost 2 hours.

Sudden power cuts in many parts of the city and non-functional traffic signals resulted in traffic jams at many big squares including Swargate-Bibvewadi Corner, Na Si Phadke Chowk near Neelayam Theatre, Nal Stop Chowk, Belbaug Chowk, entire Laxmi Road and Maldhakka Chowk.

Areas near all the three state transport bus stands in the city at Pune railway station area,   Swargate and Shivajinagar saw traffic snarls.

Major chowks in the city witnessed traffic chaos and the traffic moved at a slow pace. Office-goers were seen taking shelter at the doors of the shops and waiting for the rain to stop.

Water-logging took place at various areas in the city and affected the traffic and added to the chaos.

Mohit Sharma, who works at a private company in Hinjewadi said, “It was getting dark in the evening. I thought I would reach my home in Kothrud before it started raining. But I had reached only halfway when it started raining heavily. The areas of Bavdhan and Kothrud were water-logged and I faced a lot of difficulty in reaching home.”
