Pune: As experts of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have predicted below-normal rainfall in coming monsoon season because of the El Nino effect, the responsibility of saving water becomes a priority for every citizen. As resources to fulfill the growing need of water will also have to be eventually explored, rainwater harvesting is perhaps the simplest way out.
A few years ago when the state witnessed drought-like situation, dna had taken up an initiative to promote rainwater harvesting in Pune though various campaigns and workshops that was quite successful. This year too, dna has kicked-off one more awareness campaign to promote rainwater harvesting.
The city gets 11.50 thousand Million Cubic (TMC) water, and the civic administration is pressed for 16.50 TMC water supply, all thanks to the growing population and urbanisation. Now, the time has come for citizens to take up some responsibility for water conservation. The city gets average rainfall of 770 mm, and using rainwater, the burden on the irrigation department will certainly reduce.
