Pune: The president of the Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat, Mohan Nanavre (KKPKPMN) has condemned the Department of Social Justice as it failed to fulfil the requirements of needy students. The president also wants the name of the department to be changed to the department of social (in)justice.

According to Nanavre, the department has miserably failed to do its duties and has also caused monetary losses to thousands of waste pickers in Maharashtra by not including their children in the centrally sponsored scheme of pre-matric scholarships, otherwise given to children of those working in unclean occupations, even after one year since the central government issued an order to include them.
Under the scheme, day scholars are entitled to Rs 1850 per year and hostelites get Rs 8000 per year.
The scheme was stated in 1978 to enable children of those in unclean occupations to enter the educational mainstream.

“A performance audit covering the period from 2008-09 to 2012-13 has revealed deficiencies in planning, financial management, implementation of Schemes, procurements, etc. There were shortfalls in the inspections of government hostels, aided and ashram schools and arrears in internal audit,” Nanavre said.

Nanavre has also demanded stern action against the department, pointing out the hurdles faced by students during their college admissions with certificates and fees.
