Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s words words, ‘Be the change you wish to see’, a group of first year junior college girls have come together to start an initiative ‘Aazadiyaan’. This unique programme will showcase the talent of and raise funds for the differently abled and underprivileged people.

The idea behind the initiative was the girls giving back to society by doing something creative.
Explaining their initiative, Debashree Mitra, a member of the group and a Std XI student of Fergusson College, said they hit upon the idea of Aazadiyaan during the break after Std X exams.

“We researched about organisations on the Internet and then approached these institutes to check if their students would perform with us. After they agreed, we decided to train with them and got involved in organising the show,” Debashree said.

Finally, it was decided that along with the girls, around 60 children from Jagriti School for Blind Girls, Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and Maher would come on one platform and perform skits, dances and a choir.

Next came the exercise of organising the actual show, which the girls decided to hold at Balgandharva Rangmandir. They formed a delegation and started approaching corporates and family friends for sponsors. Finally, Rs50,000 fell into their kitty and the hall was booked for December 9. Tickets priced at Rs500, Rs300 and Rs100 were printed. The sale of 149 of 989 tickets generated another Rs18,000 and the girls are confident that the show would go through.
“We are short of at least Rs50,000, but we are confident of raising it before the deadline, which is the end of this week,” added Malavika Ramanathan, another member of the group.
