A city advocate has written to the state government that the resolution made by University of Pune (UoP) senate to name the varsity after social reformer Savitribai Phule is a biased decision. And, he has suggested names of other freedom fighters and saints for consideration.
Advocate Amarsinh Jadhavrao, who is also a freedom fighter from Goa Liberation Movement, threatened to go to the court if the state government refuses to rethink the decision.
He has recommended names of Saint Dnyaneshwar, Saint Tukaram, Rajmata Jijabai, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, Annabhau Sathe and freedom fighter V D Sawarkar to be taken for consideration.
“I have no objection to name the varsity after Savitribai Phule. However, there are other social reformers, saints and freedom fighters whose names also should have been considered,” he adds.
Jadhavrao further said other suggestions should have been sought before naming the university after someone. Moreover, members of the society should also be given the right to suggest the name for the varsity along with the senate members.
