Pune: The Pune-Satara highway witnessed yet another mishap, when a container driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into six two-wheelers and a tempo near Navale flyover at 2.45 pm on Thursday.
Two bikers, one among them an engineering student, were crushed to death in the freak mishap.Three more people sustained injuries, after the driver of a container bearing registration number MH 04 FV 5930 lost control of the vehicle and rammed into six two-wheelers and a tempo.
After the tyre burst, the driver lost control and went on to hit the divider and entered the service road. This is where the wreckage occurred.
The police have identified the deceased as Sunny Hodel (22), who died as a result of being crushed under heavy copper plates kept inside the trailer. Hodel was rushed to the hospital and died undergoing treatment.
Professor Dayanad Shendekar (37) of Narhe Engineering College, died on the spot. Three others who sustained multiple injuries have been identified as Sandeep Lokhande (35), Vijay Sarode (60) and Megha Rani Nikam (31).
Senior police inspector of Dattawadi police station Sanjay Nimbalkar, said, "The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, Megha was discharged after fist-aid treatment, while Lokhande and Sarode are currently in the intensive care unit (ICU)."
In the meanwhile the driver of the container, Ajit Kumar Yadav (44), resident of Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh has been taken into police custody.
