In-charge of Yerawada police station Kishor Jadhav and former corporator of the area Sulabha Kshirsagar have given a new meaning to the term ‘charity begins at home’.

The duo approached five schools of Yerawada and Wadgaonsheri areas and collected 600 kg of food grains in the last two weeks.

The food grain will be provided to the drought-affected tribal of Vendara and Retawadi village in Khed taluka.

An encounter specialist, Jadhav said, “The idea came to mind while speaking to the school students about the drought situation prevailing in the state.” “While interacting with various self help groups, I realised that people residing in these villages are facing problems like unemployment, scarcity of water and food. We have collected 600 kg of wheat, cereals, rice and jowar from five schools. The target is 1,000 kg which we plan to collect from the self help groups and local politicians. On March 27, we will personally visit the village and distribute it,” said Kshirsagar.

The five schools approached by the duo include Lady Taherunnisa Inamdar higher secondary school in Wadgoansheri, Agrasen High school, Samata School, Dr Nanasaheb Parulekar Vidyalaya and Netaji Shubhash Chandra Bose Madhyamik Vidyalaya, all from Yerawada.

Swapnali Bhosale (14), a standard IX student of lady Taherunnisa Inamdar school, said, “When I heard about the initiative, I informed my mother about it. I also approached my neighbours and asked them to contribute. I managed to collect 1.5 kg of wheat.”

Aabas Shaikh, local chairman of Lady Taherunnisa Inamdar School, said, “The 800 students and staff members of our school donated 250 kg of cereals and wheat.”
