The state home department has finally sanctioned 50 CCTV cameras to the Yerawada central jail. The decision follows possible terror threats and life threats to inmates of one of the prominent jails in the country.

The jail authorities will monitor these cameras in a server room, where a guard would be appointed 24x7 to keep a watch on suspicious and criminal activities.

Speaking to dna, jail superintendent Yogesh Desai said, “The home department has sanctioned 50 CCTVs in the first phase. They have been installed at major wards and crucial pointss. Wiring of the cameras have been completed and they will be active in the next couple of days.”

In 2012, Quateel Siddiqui (26), an alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative, was murdered by a local goon and inmate Sharad Mohol and his accomplice Alok Bhalerao. Since then the jail authorities were planning to install CCTVs to ensure security of inmates and thwart terror attacks.
Quateel was allegedly planning to plant a bomb at Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple on the day when German Bakery blasts took place.

Desai further said, “There have been a couple of incidents where inmates had fought with each other. Moreover, mobile phones and marijuana have been seized from them. We hope such incidents will decrease after CCTVs are installed. Also, the inmates’ activities will come under the coverage.”
