Finally, twin town to get its 2nd garbage depot

With the forest department handing its land to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the civic body will now be able to set up its proposed Punwale garbage depot.

The project was stalled for the past six years due to land acquisition issues.

The state government had given its approval to the project way back in 2008 when Dilip Bund was the PCMC commissioner.

The current garbage depot is at Moshi, where nearly 500 tons of garbage is dumped on a daily basis. The new garbage depot was planned taking into consideration the needs of the growing city.

“The garbage generated in the twin township can be dumped at the existing garbage depot for four more years as the area is getting populated rapidly. The proposed Punawale garbage depot will cater to the needs of the city for the next 30 years,” said PCMC commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi . He added that the Moshi depot will remain functional even after the new garbage depot at Punawale becomes operational. “Use of both the garbage depots will be necessitated to tackle the solid waste management issues of twin township,” he added.

Local residents feel that the depot will pollute the area, but the civic officials think otherwise.
