Pune: With moderate to heavy rainfalls in the city since four days, the four dams in the catchment areas supplying water to the city can be expected to start filling in soon. Just a week back, the total capacity of all the four dams around the city totaled to 1.14 Thousand Million Cubic Feet (TMC). After the continuous rain showers the capacity is increased to 1.27 TMC on Monday. However taking into account the 29TMC total capacity of Khadakwasla irrigation system, this marginal increase is not much respite until the same trend continues in the catchment areas.

"A total of 15mm rains in Temghar, 13mm in Warasgaon, 13 mm in Panshet and 1mm in Khadakwasla was recorded on Monday. Rains in catchment area will increase the amount of water in the dam" said the officials of irrigation and flood control department of Pune.

Though the water levels in Temghar and Varasgaon remains nil, both the catchment areas are receiving moderate to heavy rains and the dam is expected to start storing water soon. The water level of Khadakwasla and Panshet has increased to 0.65 TMC and 0.64 TMC respectively.
The dam capacities can be expected to rise further as the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the city region for the next 24 to 48 hours. The officials at the met department said,

"The low pressure belt around the Bay of Bengal persists and the conditions are favorable for rainfall activity to remain strong in the west coast. Satellite images show strong convective clouds above the state indicating increased rainfall activity in the interiors including Pune city"

Though the city's maximum temperature dropped to 30 degree celsius on Monday, it will further reduce to 28 degree celsius in the next 48 hours.
