Vasant Bamne, a bus conductor, is lying in a vegetative state after receiving a head injury on March 31. While he recuperates in the intensive care unit (ICU), his wife Vaishali is running helter-skelter to pay off creditors who gave her funds to pay hospital bills amounting to Rs7.7 lakh so far.

She has also to arrange money for his treatment, run the household and pay for the education of three children.

If this wasn’t enough, Bamne’s one-room apartment in Jaamdar Wada on Bajirao Road was burgled on April 11, while his wife was tending to him in the ICU. “My husband was in a coma. I was looking after him in the ICU. On Gudi Padwa, I was in hospital when thieves broke into my house and ran away with 12 tolas of gold jewellery that I had planned to sell for my husband’s treatment,” recalled Vaishali.

The Bamne family’s ordeal began on March 31 when the breadwinner, Vasant, who was employed by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd decided to visit his village near Chiplun for a fair.

He slipped and fell on the cornerstone of a house, receiving a severe head injury and was rushed to a nearby hospital. After 12 hours, he was brought to Pune since his condition worsened. He suffered a brain hemorrhage. Neurosurgeon Dr Sanjay Vhora performed an emergency craniotomy and subsequent treatment brought him out of the coma in which he had slipped. “Currently he is bed-ridden, conscious but doesn’t obey commands,” is how Dr Vhora described his condition, adding that Vasant needs at least one month of additional hospitalisation. “He will need one more surgery, but that depends on his progress,” said Vaishali.

On Saturday, Bamne was moved out of Ruby Hall Clinic to Sassoon General Hospital. The reason – his wife Vaishali couldn’t afford the hospital bills anymore. “The transport body helped us with Rs2.7 lakh and the rest of the money I managed to raise by taking friendly loans from family and friends. But now even their finances are stretched and we cannot afford the private hospital’s bills any longer. Besides medication, I have to manage my household expenses and children’s education expenses as well.”
