Climate change is affecting the rainfall pattern of the state. Scientists at the city-based India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pulak Guhathakurta and Elizabeth Saji have found a decrease in rainfall received by the state from January to May. In their latest research paper, they  have pointed out that this decrease in rainfall would have a major impact on agriculture and water cycle of the state.

The violent thundershowers, characteristics of pre-monsoon rain, seem to have vanished from the weather cycle of the state, they stated in the paper.

Based on district-wise data collected over 106 years, the researchers have shown how the rainfall pattern in the state has been changing. Seven districts have shown a drastic decrease in the rainfall pattern in January, 15 in February, three in March, six in April have shown similar drastic decrease in rainfall they receive.

The paper stated that similar trends were observed for the remaining districts for May, June and July.

“Although, there was no significant decrease in the rainfall received by the districts from August to October, it does not augur well for both agriculture and ground water recharging,” Guhathakurta told DNA.

He said the decrease in the rain in the above months resulted in the total absence of pre- and post-monsoon showers as well as violent thundershowers which were characteristic of the state.

Monsoon rain, the experts say, mostly can’t percolate in the groundwater levels and thus, the pre- and post-monsoon showers play an important role in the same.

According to Guhathakurta, this was the first time such a state-level analysis of the rainfall was undertaken.
