Pune: In order to attract meritorious students to Sciences stream and the aim to build the required human resource pool for strengthening and expanding the science and technology system, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) had introduced Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (Inspire) scholarship.
As per the scheme, the students who score above 80 per cent at HSC level in Science stream will get Rs one lakh scholarship if they opt for basic sciences and take admission for First Year Bachelor of Science. However, it seems that the scheme is not able to attract these students as very few students are opting out for it.

While speaking to dna, the Principal of Modern College, Dr Rajendra Zunjarrao, the basic objective to implement the scheme was to attract students who score above 80 per cent in HSC as the trend is that those who get such marks they either opt for Engineering or Medical.

“As per the scholarship, the students have to maintain above 80 per cent marks for next two years to get eligible for the scholarship and are supposed to complete project works under guides which are prescribed by the DST,” said Zunjarrao.

Dr Nita Patil, the associate professor with Modern College from Botany Department said that they have only one girl student who had opted for the scholarship and currently pursuing her TYBSc.
At Fergusson College, the condition is bit good as last year there were 30 students who had scored 80 per cent marks had taken admission for Bsc and chose for Inspire scholarship.

“Though as compared to other colleges, the number of students who have opted for the scheme is good, it should be increased and more and more students should come to the basic sciences as they can make their careers in research and even become scientists,” said Dr Sameer Terdalkar, the Coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Fergusson College.

Another Assistant Professor with the same college, Dr Shankar Laware said that there are several avenues available in the field of research. “Whenever, parents come to me to seek advice about which stream their children should go after XII if they have achieved above 80 per cent, I tell them about the Inspire scheme and try to convince them how it will help students to develop research base aptitude.
