Drunk driving: 195 drivers held in special four-hour night drive

Around 195 drunk drivers were arrested during the four-hour drive carried out by the Pune city traffic police department on Friday night. 

As many as 3,400 drivers have been arrested so far this year. Last month, the city traffic police had nabbed 372 drivers.

Senior police inspector (traffic planning) Rajendra Kamire said, “The special drive was held on Friday night between 10 pm to 2 am. We will continue the drive in the coming days as the number of drunk driving cases is increasing. Most of the offenders are youngsters.”

According to Kamire, the procurement of 50 new breathalyser has helped to conduct the drive across the city, “People who are caught in drunken state must know that their licence can be suspended for 30 to 180 days,” he said.

“We will patrolling at nights in Koregaon Park, Baner and Hinjewadi as more than 70% of these cases are registered from these areas,” he said. puneinbox@dnaindia.net
