A senior citizen, 18 schoolchildren were injured, 3 still being treated in Baramati
It was a horrific day for Sortewadi residents in Baramati Taluka on Wednesday when a car driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, knocked down 18 schoolchildren and a senior citizen. The following day, the car driver died of a cardiac arrest while he was being produced in the court.
The mishap took place at Sortewadi on Nira-Baramati Road on Wednesday evening when the schoolchildren were walking home from school. Popat Hanumantrao Gulumkar (45), a resident of Wadgaon Nimbalkar, who was driving towards Wadgaon Nimbalkar, lost control over his vehicle and knocked down the school children and a senior citizen who were walking by the roadside.
Following the accident, Gulumkar was arrested by the Wadgaon Nimbalkar police. He died of a cardiac arrest while he was being produced before the Baramati court on Thursday. Sub inspector Gajanan Gajbare of Wadgaon Nimbalkar police station said, “He started sweating while we were taking him to the Baramati court on Thursday.
Later, while he was giving his statement in the court, he suddenly fell down. We rushed him to a private hospital where he was declared dead due to cardiac arrest.”
Sortewadi residents are yet to come out of the shock the mishap sent them into.
All the school children are of Sortewadi Secondary School. Rohit Deshmukh (19), resident of Sutarwadi, was among the local residents who took the school children to the nearby hospital.
Speaking to dna Deshmukh said, “I was going for a cricket match when I saw the car knocking down the school children one by one. The children were crying. We immediately got all the injured students admitted to a nearby hospital.”
Sahil Atole (12), one of the students of Sortewadi School, said, “Ï saw my friend being knocked down. I got so scared that I started crying and shouted for help.”
