Pune: A doctor has been booked by police for allegedly conducting abortion on a woman without her consent under the pretext of regular check up.

Poonam Wagh (21), a nurse by professional married Pravin Wagh (24), a resident of Shirur. Poonam had married Pravin two years back against her parents wishes. Poonam, on Friday approached Shikrapur police station alleging that the doctor Satish Chavan, her husband Pravin and her in laws forcefully aborted her child. A case of Atrocity has also been filed against them.
Inspector Shrikant Kankal of Shikrapur police station said, “Poonam married to Pravin two years back in Alandi against his parents will. They thought their parents will accept them but she was banished from her community. To avoid the fights and disputes, Poonam along with her husband started living separately as she was pregnant and did not want their child to suffer. On June 28, Pravin claimed that he wanted to collect cash from his relatives in Pargoan and asked her to accompany him. Later he suggested that, as they have to travel back to their house, they will have routine check up at a Pargoan based hospital.”
He added, “Dr Chavan examined her and claimed that she is weak and needed keep her under observation as travelling may harm the foetus. She was then put on a saline drip and given sedatives. After three hours she gained consciousness and realised that her child was aborted. She was shocked as none of them had asked for her signatures or permission. Later Poonam said that Pravin’s mother abused her and claimed they did not want a backward caste child. Pravin deserted her. She then approached a womens centre and we have lodged the complaint.”
Deputy Superintendent of police Rajendra More said, “We have arrested Pravin and his mother while Dr Chavan is absconding. Soon we shall arrest him. Poonam is undergoing a treatment at Sassoon general hospital. As per her statement we have registered the case and after an opinion about the illegal abortion we will invoke the further charges.”
