It appears that city cops need lessons in morals and ethics training as, in a recent case, two constables — Ashish Pawar and Sampat Pardi — from the Deccan-Gymkhana police and Bhosari station were found to be involved in an alleged kidnapping and dacoity case that took place on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway near Khopoli. The crime has taken place last week.

This is not the first instance in which a cop’s shady role has been exposed. A constable from BDDS was arrested by the Swargate police station in an alleged case of fake CBI team that raided a house of Sohrab Kayani, the owner of city’s Kayani Bakery and made away with Rs21 lakh.

On December 11, a case was lodged by goldsmith Maruti Lavate (22) from Solapur and his two associates with Khopoli police station. The trio said that the incident took place when they had stopped for refreshments at Foodmall on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway around 9.30pm on December 10 while returning from Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazar to their hometown in Sangli. A gang of ten people approached the bus they were travelling in and said that they needed to interrogate the trio in chain-snatching incident. They made the trio sit in a car and at gunpoint looted Rs1.29crore that they were carrying as they had sold jewellery in Mumbai. The three goldsmiths were later left at an isolated place in Lonavla.

On December 13, the police zeroed in on the kingpin of this gang — Shridhar alias Hapya alias Anna alias Amol Ghadge (30) — who had worked with the goldsmith on the basis of his call records details. He was later nabbed.

Sanjay Shukla, inspector in-charge of Khopoli police station said, “The arrested person Ghadge mentioned the names of police constables Ashish Pawar and Sampat Pardi from Pune and others, including Deepak Narewadi, Prakash Chavan, Sunil Date, Shankar Jadhav, Hiraman Salunke and Sudharshan Javire.

Ashish Pawar is attached with Bhosari police and Sampat Paradi is a driver with Deccan Gymkhana police.

All have been arrested under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code comprising dacoity, wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent and assault. Along with IPC they have also been slapped under Arms Act and

Ghadge revealed he was to get 20% share while the constables were going to get 30% each of the booty.

Raigad superintendent of police Ankush Shinde said, “We have recovered gold ornament and cash worth Rs72 lakh and car from police constables.” Meanwhile, all ten arrested persons were produced before the court of judicial magistrate (first class) and has been remanded to police custody till December 27.
