With more number of couples coming forward for divorce claiming mental and intellectual compatibility as the ground, court counsellors are increasingly referring the couples to psychologists for compatibility testing.

In fact city psychologists confirm that family court counsellors and even lawyers are referring more number of couples for emotional quotient (EQ) and intellectual quotient (IQ) tests besides psychometric analysis. Based on lengthy questionnaire followed by personal interviews, the psychologists then give such couples a ‘diagnosis’ on how to make the relationships work.

Family court lawyer Pratibha Ghorpade confirmed the rising trend adding that mostly couples state that they face problems in taking joint decisions, have different expectations from partners over emotional issues or that “their wavelengths do not match”.

“In such cases, sometimes an EQ test can point out the difference in personality traits of the two people which can help them understand each others’ frustrations and expectations,” she said.

Another lawyer Sunita Nandakishor Jangam said that she has referred many couples for EQ tests and at most times, couples who have had arranged marriages face lot of compatibility issues. “Mostly in such cases, people have high expectations from their spouses and later they find that it doesn’t match expectations and hence marriages break down.”

However, she recalled a case where a techie married his long term girlfriend whom he had met on a social networking site. “After marriage, the woman realised that her husband is immature and his aggression started coming to the fore, while interacting with her family members. They underwent EQ tests and lots of counselling sessions but they failed.”

What’s more age is no bar confirm experts who say that even after few decades, couples come forward claiming incompatibility.

Senior lawyer Abhay Apte said that such tests help in counselling but in court cases, they have no stand.

“Most of the cases which are coming ahead mostly seen due to competitive work culture, aggressive, working hours and life style. It is not just seen in newly married couples but also at any age level.”

He recalled a case wherein a city businessman who was married for 30years moved divorce stating that his wife doesn’t match upto his emotional wavelength and the couple was referred for EQ tests and psychometric tests.

Another marriage counsellor Smita Joshi who is attached to family court said that after initial counselling fails, cases are referred for such tests. “After receiving EQ tests reports, there is lot of scope for resolving matter amicably. Most disputes arise out of stress and misunderstandings and once couples realise the reason for such fights, their expectations change and they make adjustments for the other person. Because such tests prove that this is inherent nature of a person and if they want relationships to work, they must make adjustments.”

In fact she advised that couples must undergo such counselling before marriage to avoid chaos later.
