Cops to trifurcate Hinjewadi for better policing

Top brass submit proposal to set up separate police stations for Bavdhan and Wakad areas in Pune to curb crime

To curb crimes in Hinjewadi area, the top brass of Pune police has decided to set up two police stations at Bavdhan and Wakad in the city.

The officers are of the opinion that the jurisdiction of the Hinjewadi police station should be trifurcated in three police stations at Hinjewadi, Bavdhan and Wakad. This would help bring down the crime rate, keeping in view the additional manpower that would be available.

The Hinjewadi police station’s jurisdiction covers 55 sq km and has only 125 policemen. The crime rate of the area under the police station has consistently gone up in the last decade. The Hinjewadi area has witnessed a spurt in night robberies, thefts and house-breaking cases in the last two years. dna had reported on December 26 that Hinjewadi had become a crime zone. There was also a spate of burglaries, which was reported by dna  on December 26 and 28.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone III) Shahaji Umap told dna, “We have proposed two police stations in the zone. The Wakad police station proposal is already prepared while the Bavdhan police station proposal will be submitted in the next couple of days.”

Umap said they have studied the Hinjewadi police station areas and accordingly the areas would be trifurcated to Hinjewadi, Bavdhan and Wakad police stations. 

The crime rate in Hinjewadi area has doubled over the last couple of years. Moreover, there is a boom in real estate with many residential complexes and constructions sites coming up. “The population of the areas has increased. This is also one of the reasons behind the increasing crime rate of the areas. If we could get two new police stations, we would able to bring down crime cases of the areas,” Umap added.

When asked what measures have been taken to bring down crimes in Hinjewadi, Umap said, “We have intensified day and night patrolling. We will get extra manpower for the police station in the near future.”

Spl team for techies’ cases
Considering the rise in number of cases concerning IT professionals, the top brass of Pune police are planing to appoint a trained team of policemen that would look after only such cases in the future. Deputy commissioner of police (zone III) Shahaji Umap said, “We are planning to appoint train policemen at the Hinjewadi police station. These policemen would investigate cyber and IT professionals related cases in the future.”

Banks responsible for ATM security: Pol
Taking cognisance of ATM kiosk security in the city, Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol said the bank authorities should provide adequate security to their ATMs. He said, “The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given guidelines to all banks in the country and accordingly the banks should take care of their ATM centres.” The Pune police had conducted a special meeting with bank authorities in November and at that time Pol had mentioned that the bank authorities can apply for weapon licence. Pol said, “As of now, only one bank authority has applied for a weapon licence.”

Strict action against liquor dens
After being recently reprimanded by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol has categorically stated that the drive against liquor dens will continue across the city. Pol said, “We have instructed all police station incharges to take stern action against liquor dens. If the police station incharge is unable to stop the dens, stern action would be taken against the incharge.”
