Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has asked the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the state revenue department to review the new site for the proposed airport at Chakan in Pune district and submit a report within a month.

“The first proposed site for the airport on Pune-Nashik road, which had got nod from AAI, has been scrapped. The main reason was the opposition from locals,” Parliamentary affairs minister Harshavardhan Patil, who attended Chavan’s meeting with AAI and revenue officials, said.

“The chief minister has asked the AAI and the revenue department to review the new site, which is on Pune-Solapur highway,” Patil said.

Chakan airport is supposed to service the Pune-bound air traffic, as the existing Lohegaon airport near Pune belongs to the Defence Ministry, and the civilian air traffic there is going to be stopped in the near future.
