The Mumbai police produced Hasan Ali Khan, the alleged kingpin in a major money laundering and tax evasion racket, in the court of judicial magistrate (first class) AM Pingale in Pune on Monday noon. He was taken into custody by the Chatuhshrungi police at 12.30 pm. After police investigations that lasted five hours, Khan was reproduced in the court by 5.15 pm.

After the hearing, the magistrate remanded him in judicial custody till March 23 and he was sent back to Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail. He was taken away in a sports utility vehicle by seven Mumbai police officers. Khan faces four cases in Hyderabad, Patna, Pune and Worli. In Pune, the case was filed at Chatuhshrungi police station in 2011 by Shakuntala Rane (58), an official in the Pune passport office. The case pertains to allegedly furnishing false information while renewing the passport in 2004. Khan has been slapped with charges of cheating and forgery under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and Passports Act, 1967.

On Monday, when the magistrate asked Khan if he had any complaint or faced any torture by the police, he replied in the negative.“Principal district judge (Mumbai) Sapna Joshi had directed the superintendent of Mumbai central prison to send Khan to the JMFC Pune on Monday with sufficient escort to appear before the court and bring him back to Mumbai on Tuesday. She ordered them to submit the compliance report to the court,” said Khan’s lawyer Shrikant Shivade.

Police inspector (crime) Subhash Nikam of Chatuhshrungi police, who is investigating the case, said, “We have taken his specimen and natural handwriting samples, signatures and fingerprints. The case pertains to 2004, but was registered with the police in 2011. We need to file the chargesheet and that’s why we asked for his custody.”

At the police station, Khan was interrogated for five hours and asked to write on 15 pages. Khan’s wife Rheema and his chartered accountant Sunil Shinde were present in the court.

“My husband has been made a scapegoat. For the past three years, he is in jail for no fault of his and his health is deteriorating. He was a regular taxpayer and the amount of tax he paid was huge. For this reason he has been arrested,” she alleged.
