A police sub-inspector of Bund Garden police station, Pravin Phanse, has successfully scaled two mountains in the Himalayas recently. Following which, police commissioner Gulabrao Pol has asked Phanse to aim for the Mount Everest (8848 meters), the highest peak in the world.

The 32-year-old cop, who hails from Wai in Satara district, joined the Maharashtra Police force in Mumbai in 2003. In 2005, Phanse completed basic mountaineering course in ‘A’ grade from the reputed Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarakhand.

Later he passed the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examination and became PSI in 2012. Since then he has been posted at the Bund Garden police station.

Phanse has been associated with Mumbai-based Sahyadri Adventure Klub (SAK) since 2000. Phanse was part of the 20-member team of SAK which scaled Mount Hanuman Tibba (5928 meters) and Mount Shitidhar (5280 m), both in Himachal Pradesh. The team also included police inspector Shrirang Nadgouda from Bhandup police station, Mumbai police, and Police Naik Sachin Pawar of Dadar railway police station.

Phanse, a BSc graduate, said, “I have a passion for mountaineering since college days and in all these years I have trekked more than 100 mountains in Maharashtra and other states. Now it is difficult to get time for my passion while doing police work. However, I make it a point to trek nearby hills like Sinhagad and others in Lonavala on weekly offs and holidays.”
