The regional science centre coming up opposite Auto Cluster in Chinchwad will be open for public soon. It will have life-size models of dinosaurs, displays on information technology, inflatable dome planetarium and galleries on science, engineering and automobiles.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has set up the centre along with the National Council of Science Museum (NCSM). It is the second such centre in Maharashtra after Nagpur. Students can learn science through exhibitions and games at this centre.

The centre developed over 7.5 acre has a two-storied building covering 3,220 sq m — 1,948 sq m on the ground floor and 1,272 sq m on the first floor. The building will have a ramp and a special lift for the physically challenged. The project, funded by the Union ministry for culture, housing and poverty alleviation, is guided by Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai. The cost of the project is Rs9.75 crore, of which the Centre’s assistance is Rs4.25 crore and the remaining will be contributed by the civic body.

PCMC joint city engineer and project co-coordinator Praveen Tupe said, “There will be 60 exhibits in the science park that will have three main galleries. The gallery showing exhibits on developments in automobile engineering — from invention of a wheel to the latest developments — will be on the ground floor.”
The inflatable dome mini-planetarium with a seating capacity of 15 to 20 people will provide information about astronomy and screen films and documentaries.

A fun science gallery will have exhibits on energy, such as solar, mechanical, electrical, etc. Students will be able to understand the basic principles in physics, mathematics, geography, geology, chemistry, bio-sciences and electrical engineering. Another gallery displaying exhibits on entertainment, science and computers will enable them to learn the subjects through games.

The 650-sq m automobile gallery on the ground floor will showcase the timeline, muscle power, steam power, steam power in use, to and fro motion to circular, external combustion engine, internal combustion engine and automobiles in the past and present. The energy gallery will consist of energy fundamentals, forms of energy, energy transformation, innovations and sources of energy etc. PCMC plans to invite nearby industrial units to display their models at the centre.
