Pune: In order to ensure timely repair of the potholes the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reactivated its helpline number last week. However, even before the arrival of the monsoons the helpline has stopped working.

Team dna carried out a test drive on the helpline numbers given by the PMC. We tried all day but to no avail.
Last monsoon civic authorities faced Punekars’ wrath over potholes. Opposition parties and various NGOs had criticised the civic administration for poor quality work of roads after which the then municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak activated the helpline. Residents complained of over 4,000 potholes.
This year, the civic administration decided to reactivate the helpline even before the arrival of monsoon. A PMC officer on condition of anonymity said, “We reactivated the helpline early so that if residents spot any potholes our staffers can repair that patch within 24 hours.”
However, team dna kept dialing the helpline number every half an hour from 10 am till evening but not once the call was answered.
Vivek Velankar, president of Sajag Nagarik Manch, said, “The non-responsive helpline shows the PMC is not serious. The quality of roads of the city continues to be poor.” When called Yuvraj Deshmukh, executive engineer of road department of PMC, he said, “I will give necessary directions to staffers who are supposed to answer calls and their duties will be monitored.”
