It took robbers less than twenty minutes to rob Rs20 lakh from the residence of a Mumbai-based businessman settled in Pune. The businessman Abbas Yusuf Dhorajiwala (25), a resident of Saibaba Nagar in Fatima Enclave at Kondhwa-Khurd has recently moved to the rented house in Pune after selling off his property in Mumbai. The money stolen is a large chunk of his life’s savings.

On the ill-fated day, he had stepped out of home to see a flat for purchase and when he returned after twenty minutes, he was shocked to find his house burgled. While returning home, Dhorajiwala had also noticed a pouch containing gold ornaments that had fallen near the staircase of the building.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon, between 12 noon to 12.20 pm, just a day after the Dawoodi Bohra family celebrated Bakri Eid.

“The family runs a paper business in Mumbai and are staying in Pune on rental basis. They had sold their house in Mumbai and planned to purchase a house in Pune for which they had kept Rs20 lakh cash at home. Abbas stayed with his mother and younger sister. On Tuesday morning, his sister went to college and his mother went to a house of a relative. Abbas left his home with a broker to finalise the house in the NIBM area. Within 20 minutes he returned and when climbing up the staircase of the building, he found a leather pouch which looked familiar. He went to pick up the pouch and noticed his mother’s gold ornaments estimated worth Rs5 lakh,” said assistant police inspector Sunil Thopate of Kondhwa police who is investigating the case.

Thopate said Abbas rushed up the staircase and found his house unlocked and bedroom in a mess. Some unidentified person had broken the iron cupboard and taken away Rs20 lakh cash kept in it, Thopate said, adding, “We are working on some tips and soon we shall arrest the culprits.”
