Budding national archer Pratima Boro ends life on ASI campus

A 23-year-old national archer Pratima Boro committed suicide in her room at the Army Sports Institute (ASI) near Pingle wasti in Mundhwa on Friday afternoon.

The incident came to light when Boro’s coach and other players came to her room after she did not turn up for the afternoon practice session of the national camp for the recurve event. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan by using bed sheets. The police did not find any suicide note from the room.

Speaking to dna, police sub-inspector Arun Ghodke of Mundhwa police station said, “Boro had come for the national camp on April 26. On Friday morning, she attended the practice session along with other players and went back to her room. Later in the afternoon, she was to attend another practice session but did not turn up. As a result, her coach went to her room and found the door closed. She did not respond to repeated knocking on the door, following which he called up other players and officials and broke open the door.”

Pratima had tied two bedsheets to the ceiling fan to hang herself. Ghodke said, “We rushed to the spot soon after the ASI authorities informed us about the incident. We searched the room but did not find any suicide note. Later, the body was sent to the Command Hospital for post-mortem. Her parents have been informed about it. The reason behind her suicide is yet to be known.”

Pratima was a well-known archer from Assam. She had participated in several international competitions as well. The Mundhwa police have registered a case of accidental death.
