The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) is likely to make English paper more activity-based rather than the present ‘one question and answer’ pattern.
The decision which is pending for sometime now, if implemented, will ask students to answer objective-type questions like fill in the blanks, match the following, complete the following sentences, etc. There will be less number of descriptive questions.
“It sounds simple but it will test the intelligence of the students,” said convener of Board of Studies of State Board Umesh Pradhan.
Pradhan, who is also the principal of RCM Gujarati High School, said, “We are trying to reduce the number of marks based on question-answer pattern in the paper thereby making it more friendly and testing the students’ understanding of the subject.”
Former board chairman Sarjerao Jadhav said, “We have tested the formula informally but it has yet not got the formal approval. We are experimenting on the lines of open-ended question forms which are taking center stage in the country.”
Pradhan, who had recently conducted a workshop of principals over the changed pattern of the standard X syllabus, said, “The workshop focused on the internal assessment of the subjects. The internal assessment will have 20 marks which will include marks on home assignments, book keeping, etc. Trying to reduce the exam stress on students, we have also directed teachers and school representatives on how to prepare a student for the examination,” said Pradhan.
As many as 40 school principals and representatives attended the workshop.
