The fate of nearly 800 standard XII students of Sir Parshurambhau (SP) College hangs in balance with Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) deciding to cancel the index number of the college.

The board issues an index number to every college for examination and other purposes. The decision has been taken by the board after the college didn’t heed to the former’s repeated reminders to lodge a police complaint against a former standard XII student who had allegedly forged his mark sheet and inflated secured percentage.

Refusing to take a sympathetic view towards the current batch, the board officials told dna that it was SP College’s lookout.

“It is up to the college to see what happens to the current batch because according to the rules, students shall not be allowed to fill examination forms after the index number is cancelled,” said MSBSHSE Pune division secretary Pushplata Pawar.

After the index number of the college has been cancelled, even repeaters from HSC who had passed in the October exams would be unable to get their mark sheets.

MSBSHSE defended their action stating that despite repeated communications to the college, they dilly-dallied and did not take cognizance of the case.

“An online result of standard XII was declared on May 30. One student Pranav Mandake from science got 71%, and on June 6, the physical mark sheet was issued to students. After a few days, we came to know that he had inflated his marks to 95%,” said Pawar, adding that the college was notified as they had issued the mark sheet and told to lodge a complaint against the student.

“During the investigation, we came to know that the student had forged his mark sheet and he was barred for the next four academic years,” she said. Mandake went to the court and challenged the board’s decision. The court asked the board to re-look at the case and take some sympathetic approach. However, the board had said that if they allow such things to happen, there will be a trend.

“The court then directed the board to take appropriate action. Following the court’s orders, we wrote to the college to file an FIR against the student. However, after sending reminders to the college, they did not act and eventually we gave them 48 hours ultimatum on Monday. With the college missing the deadline also, we cancelled its index number,” she said. SP Education Society trustee Anant Mate said that the mark sheet issued to the student was received from the board. He said that there is no role of SP College to file an FIR and it is the board’s responsibility to lodge the case.
