Frustrated by the constant humiliation of being blackmailed and raped by an ex-sarpanch, a 17-year-old college girl hit back hard by attacking him with a sharp weapon to get rid of him. The culprit had allegedly made an obscene video of the girl with which he kept blackmailing her for six months. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon. As soon as it came to light, the Saswad Police arrested the ex-sarpanch.

The arrested sarpanch has been identified as Bapu alias Gajanan Namdev Jagtap (45) of Saswad, who was the sarpanch of Supe-Khurda village in Purandar taluka, about 90 km from Pune. According to the police, the girl is a standard XI student and used to go for tuition classes at the society where Jagtap lives.

"Jagtap has two daughters, one of whom is a classmate of the victim. In June last year, Jagtap had called the girl and took her home saying his daughter wanted to see her. There he raped the girl and made a video of it. He then  started blackmailing her over the phone. He also used to threaten her that he would upload the clip on social networking websites and defame her. Scared, the girl gave in to his demands," senior police inspector Saradar Patil said.

The girl did not reveal this to her parents as her mother is bed-ridden and father works with a private firm, Patil said. The girl is a good student, but her family is poor, so she avoided telling about what happened either to her parents or friends. Jagtap kept taking advantage of this by calling her whenever and wherever he liked, he said.

"On Wednesday, Jagtap called the girl to his home. Fed up of his demands, the girl carried a sharp weapon while going to see him and attacked him with it, injuring him seriously. The incident came to light when Jagtap was taken to a private hospital in the area. He is now out of danger and is recuperating," Patil explained.

Patil said that they have lodged a complaint against Jagtap under relevant sections of IPC, 1860. "We will probe the case and decide further action against him." Patil added.
