The state government is all set to restart the much lauded traffic-i-cop project which was shelved due to paucity of funds.

Inspector (Administration) Rajendra Kamire from traffic police said, “The state government has given instructions to the District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC) to reinstate the project. Funds have been assured for the project and the project will see the light of the day in the next couple of months.”

The project was launched in December 2009 on an experimental basis. Through the initiative, the traffic police personnel were able to find out the history of any vehicle with the help of a Blackberry cellphone device. Traffic-i-cop had won the award for the best innovative project through technology application instituted by the Ministry of Urban Development in December, 2011.

The traffic-i-cop proved to be a boon for the city traffic department as they were able to solve pending cases by just using a cellphone. Inspector Mahadev Gavade from traffic police said, “Traffic-i-cop was an effective tool. It was easy to detect the traffic violaters and cancel their licence. We had received a data of 30 lakh vehicles which were registered with Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad RTO through the project.”

He said, “As the blackberry handset was given to all the traffic cops, they were also able to trace if the person had any crime history.”

The tool
The application of traffic-i-cop was developed by the Science and Technology Park at University of Pune. It was provided to the Blackberry phones to constabulary man the traffic in the city. The service was connected to the Pune traffic server.

The software provided instant information about the details of the vehicle owner, the licence details and also kept a track of any previous offences. The data was stored after the constable fed the details through the mobile handset.
