An officer from the Mumbai anti-terrorism squad (ATS) deposing in the German Bakery blast trial before the court of special judge NP Dhote on Tuesday testified that the man wearing a cap and carrying two bags captured on a CCTV footage collected from German Bakery was Ahmed alias Yasin Batkal.

Inspector Dinesh Kadam said that Yasin was identified by his younger brother Abdul Samad.
During his examination by special public prosecutor Raja Thakare, Kadam said, “I have been working with the ATS since 2006 and was involved in the Aurangabad arms haul case. The two accused in the case, Faiyyaz Kagzi and Abu Jundal alias Zabiuddin Ansari were absconding. On May 24, 2010, Yasin’s brother Samad was detained for questioning. When he was shown the CCTV footage of German Bakery, he identified Yasin. After Mirza Himayat Baig was arrested and brought to Mumbai for questioning, it was revealed that he had purchased a bag and cellphone from Mumbai.”

Apart from Kadam, Prasad Hasabnis, inspector in-charge of Kondhwa police station, who had scrutinised the CCTV footages from ‘O’ hotel and German Bakery was also cross-examined. Baig’s lawyers A Rehman and Kaynat Shaikh have sought time to cross-examine inspector Kadam. The court has adjourned the hearing till November 3.  puneinbox@dnaindia.net
