Pune: The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Pune division has arrested an assistant police inspector (API) and police constable from the Duttawadi police station for accepting bribe to the tune of Rs50,000 in return of presenting a positive report to the court, in a case filed against a complainant at the police station. The arrested API has been identified as Vitthal Shivaji Singte and the constable as Dattatray Vithoba Nike. On Friday night, the two went to Sadashiv Peth to pick up the money from the complainant.
Speaking to dna, deputy commissioner of police (ACB) Sarang Awad said, "The complainant is a doctor, who also dabbles in the construction business. A few days ago, one person had complained against him at the police station. Following the case procedures, the police was to send a report to the court, and API Shingate was assigned as the investigating officer. Shingate then approached the complainant and demanded Rs5 lakh to send a positive report to the court. The complainant negotiated the deal for Rs3 lakh and paid up accordingly."
However, Shingate and Nike asked for Rs50,000 more. "Shingate and Nike had also asked the complainant to handover flat booking receipts worth Rs10 lakh, so that they can recover the amount when the flats were eventually sold. This frustrated the complainant, who approached us and lodged a complaint against the duo on Friday," Awad said.
Thereafter, the ACB verified the complainant's claims and laid a trap at Sadashiv Peth. Awad added, "The team led by deputy superintendent of police Hemant Bhat laid a trap at the venue and caught the duo red-handed, accepting a bribe of Rs50,000 from the complainant."
