The rail movement at Pune Railway Station came to a standstill for more than 30 minutes on Wednesday evening after followers of Asaram Bapu staged demonstration to protest against the assault charges on the self-proclaimed godman.
The followers gathered at the railway station at 6.30 pm and stopped two trains. The Railway Police Force (RPF) swung into action and cleared the railway tracks to resume back the rail service. The protestors also assaulted a few media persons who were present at the spot.
Following the incident, the security was beefed up at the station. Railway PRO of Pune division YK Singh said, “Schedule of two trains — Mumbai CST- Chennai Express (11041) and Pune- Howrah , Azad Hind Express (12129) — was affected due to the protest. The latter was delayed by more than 25 minutes.”
Santosh Yaday (37), one of the protestors, said, “We want justice for our spiritual leader. Till he is not set free, we will stage similar demonstrations in various parts of the city.”
Suneeta Ingale (28), an IT professional and a follower, said, “For the past 10 years, I am following Bapu’s satsang. He is our god and we know that he cannot do anything wrong. We want justice.”
Meanwhile, RPF along with GRP guided the protestors out of the railway station and gathered them at the main entrance.
Assistant security commissioner, Pune, Vinod Kumar, said, “The protestors were moved from the railway tracks as they were trying to stall the traffic. We have detained a few of them. No damage was caused to the railway property.”
