Chief of Army Staff General Bikram Singh visited the headquarters of Southern Command in Pune on Tuesday to review its operational preparedness. The visit is seen as crucial in the present tense scenario on the western border of the country.
The Army Chief’s visit comes a day after defence minister AK Antony stated that the armed forces have the freedom to respond to the developing situation on the border with Pakistan.

General Bikram Singh was briefed about the preparedness of the Southern Command by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Southern Command Lt Gen Ashok Singh.
Lt Gen Singh also briefed him about the developmental endeavors that the command has undertaken within its area of responsibility. According to the army officials, Gen Singh expressed satisfaction regarding the measures taken to ensure operational preparedness and he was also confident that the Southern Command is well-equipped to overcome any challenge it may face.

Gen Singh delivered a talk on ‘Leadership challenges: Making a difference’ at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) to the officers, staff and trainees of the institute.

During his speech, Gen Singh highlighted the fact that the leadership style required for every service is different and the conditions of service in the armed forces medical services is certainly challenging. He stated that the foundation of leadership is built on the core values of integrity, loyalty, respect, selfless service, courage and honour.

According to former army officials, Gen Singh’s visit holds lot of importance considering the tense situation at the border.
Lt Gen (retd) DB Shekatkar said, “The General’s visit to the Southern Command is of great importance. Though it might be a planned visit, the General must have spoken to the armed forces’ officers and he must have given them advice to be vigilant in such a tense situation. Pakistan is trying to provoke the Indian army and in such a scenario, the Army Chief must have given some instructions regarding further plan of action.”
