While Pune police have failed to curb the rising number of chain snatching incidents in the city, a senior citizen has approached the cops with a series of sketches.

Anil Kulkarni’s sketches shows a possible defensive tip that can be used to combat the chain snatchers.

The Sadashiv Peth resident has been running a business of weapons for years and has also trained personnel to handle arms.

Kulkarni first step of raising awareness started at home, where he started educating the women of his family. Now, he intends to take the step further.

Speaking to dna, Kulkarni said, “I have been reading reports about chain snatching incidents. Women usually wear mangalsutra and it remains one of the most targeted ornaments of chain snatchers. I chalked out the points and even studied the modus operandi of chain snatchers. The most common method is to ask the victim an address while showing them visiting cards. The victims are then nabbed from behind and their ornaments are snatched.”

He said, “I accordingly made the sketches. I have also met some of the victims and the police and prepared a series of sketches for the victims on how to defend themselves.”

Additional commissioner of police (crime) Shahaji Solunke said, “It’s a good initiative. We are planning to display these sketches in the city and also use similar sketches to spread awareness among citizens.”
