In the battle of the sexes, driving is often a point that is heavily debated on and the general perception shared by many is that men are better drivers than women.

However, statistics from Pune traffic police contradicts this general view of the public.Of the 921 people killed in road mishaps between January 2011 and March 2013, 766 were men while 155 were women.

Similarly, the number of men injured in road mishaps too is high as compared to women.

Police inspector (planning) from city traffic branch MS Gavade said, “The number of men drivers and pedestrians plying on the road is more than the number women. Besides, men have a tendency to drink and drive and the number of drunken driving cases are on the rise in the city.”

Speaking about cases of pedestrians mowed down by vehicles, Gavade said, “Often people avoid using footpaths and prefer to walk on the carriageway. Pedestrians also avoid using zebra crossings to cross the road.”

He added, “In order to get the number of road mishaps under control, citizens have to be more careful and should obey traffic rules. Reckless and careless driving leads to maximum number of road mishaps.”
