Thanks to a few alert children playing in Yerawada’s Indraprastha Garden on Sunday afternoon, a couple who had buried an infant in the same garden were finally arrested.

The shocking incident happened on Sunday when a few children playing in the garden noticed the body parts of the infant and alerted a few people.

During police questioning, the children recalled that they had seen a couple leaving on a bike and some children could recall the motorcycle’s registration number following which the police traced out details of the bike and arrested Dhiraj Sathe and his lover Hemlata Salvi.

The police have claimed that the woman is a widow and had an extramarital affair with the man.

Speaking to dna, assistant police inspector Abhijit Ahirao of Yerawada police station said, “Dhiraj and Hemlata had met at a function in Tingrenagar, Vishrantwadi two years ago and developed a relationship.” 

“Later, they had physical relationship and, shockingly, Hemlata claimed that she was unaware of her pregnancy till the time of delivery,” he said.

According to the officer, on December 8, Hemlata was feeling unwell and called up Dhiraj to meet her at Indraprastha garden in Yerawada area. Around 12.30 pm, Dhiraj came to the garden. At that time, Hemlata gave birth to an infant girl. Thereafter, the couple buried the infant and fled. 

The police have arrested the couple under relevant sections of IPC, 1860.
