In a massive relief for Punekars, no fresh cases of swine flu have been detected on March 30 and March 31, for the first time since January.

Although the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials say that swine flu cases are completely under control, they now fear a rise in dengue cases in the city. Currently, only seven people who are suspected to have swine flu are admitted in PMC-run hospitals, while around 40 patients are undergoing treatment.

Speaking with iamin, ST Pardeshi, head of Health Department, PMC said that increasing temperature has been one of the main reasons for the decline in swine flu cases. He added, "Currently H1N1 cases are stable but in case it rains and there is a sudden drop in temperature, there are chances that the disease may rear its head again. But with the sudden rains, we fear that dengue mosquitoes will start breeding which can be harmful."

Although no cases of dengue have been found yet, officials have started implementing measures against the disease. Intermittent rains and changing climate boosts multiplication of mosquitoes.

"Every ward officer has been asked to start identifying breeding spots in their respective areas. Fumigation has begun in many areas, especially construction sites, slums, near drainage pipes, etc. If breeding of mosquitoes is stopped now, we won’t have to worry about dengue this year," added Pardeshi.

PMC will soon begin awareness campaigns as well. "Last year a majority of the cases were observed in porches, gardens, flower pots and construction sites. This year we will be spreading awareness asking people to ensure that they do not store water for a long periods of time and maintain hygiene which will prevent spreading of dengue to a large extent,” said Pardeshi.
