Are you one of those people suffering from chronic back pain and multiple sessions of physiotherapy, and treatment is working out to no avail? Find out if your behavioral type is to blame.

A professor at the University of Pune (UoP) conducted research at the physiotherapy department of Sancheti Hospital for over several months, studying the behavioral patterns of patients suffering from lower back pain. He studied the association between the ailment and how a person acts. The researcher found that most of these patients belonged to Type A behavioral group who had poor seating and driving postures.

Dr Rajendra Mhaske, assistant professor, UoP’s Department of Psychology, explained that Type A behavior pattern is an action emotion complex that can be observed in any person who is aggressively involved in chronic, incessant struggle to achieve more in less time, often in competition with other individuals. Dr Mhaske analysed the psychological effect of their behavioural pattern on their body postures, which in turn lead to long term illnesses.

“The data collected from the patients clearly indicated that almost all the patients suffering from lower back pain (lumbago) had a type A behavior. They were detected with speed impatiency and job involvement which led them to have bad body postures resulting into lower back pain,” said Mhaske.

While 80 per cent among the patients with Type A behaviour are from the IT sector, about 85 per cent males and 70 per cent females among them were found to have bad sitting and driving postures. “These people are competitive, speed impatient, strong tempered and are more job oriented than others.

They are constantly working on something and want to get done with their chores in a hurry. This kind of behaviour causes them to ignore their discomfort and they tend to have a bad posture while working,” he said.

“While lower back pain causes more disability among working age adult than any other disability, a lot of environmental factors contribute to type A behaviour pattern which leads to lumbago -- severe lower back pain. Apart from environmental factors like bad streets and uncomfortable seating, stress is the major factor found among type A behaviour people. People from the IT sector have a more sedentary lifestyle in addition to the workload which causes ignorance of body postures,” he said.

The Solution..

In India, 60 per cent of people have significant back pain problem at some time or other in their lives, out of which most have type A behaviour. Altering the behaviour pattern is often difficult but can be achieved overtime.

“People with this type of tendencies should try to slow themselves down and be patient. Changing behavioral pattern cannot happen overnight. However, taking precautions may help avoid discomfort,” said Mhaske.

The Type A behavior is found to be positively associated with total body posture style more among male lower back patients than in females. Poor driving style, poor seating, speed and impatience are the key factors that contribute to lumbago. Changing behavioral patterns may help the patient’s recovery.
