Every time, hotelier and builder Subhash Sanas asked his dear friend Rajesh Khanna, who breathed his last on July 18, to reconstruct his prime property ‘Aashirwad’ bungalow into a tall building and keep a penthouse for himself, Khanna turned the proposal down. According to Sanas, Khanna wanted his bungalow to be turned into a ‘Rajesh Khanna museum after his death, just like Elvis Presley.

“I went to meet Kaka last month at his ‘Aashirwad’ bungalow. I always told him that as it is a prime property, he should demolish it and make a tall building but he wanted his house to be turned into a ‘Rajesh Khanna museum after he dies. That was his dream,” a sad Sanas told DNA.

Sanas also tells us Khanna’s love for cars. A car aficionado himself, Sanas sold five cars to Kaka.

“I first sold him the 1967 model Toyota Corona before he got married to Dimple. He became a superstar after buying the car and would tell me that the car turned out to be very lucky for him,” he said.

Sanas said that the payment arrangement for the car was ‘payable when able.’ “He gave me the money for it in small amounts for a period of time. I then sold him a two-door Chevrolet Impala followed by a Lotus Elan Sport car (this is a limited edition car with only 25cars made in the world),” said a proud yet sad Sanas.

Sanas added, “Later I sold him a 1974 model Mercedes Benz 220 Diesel when his film Thodi si Bewafai was released and last I sold a metal blue color Mercedes Benz 220 1996 model 4yrs ago which he was still using till the end.”

Subhash, who now has made a car museum at his Beverly Hills Hotel in Lullanagar recalls how the Indian hearththrob came for the property’s opening along with other actors like Tanuja, Kangana Ranaut, Shekhar Suman and Aditya Pancholi.

Sanas cancelled his birthday celebration last week when Bollywood’s first superstar was admitted to Lilavati Hospital.

“There was no way I could have hosted a party when my dear friend was battling death,’ he said.

Sanas has the fondest memories with Khanna. “I would often go to Mumbai to spend time with him and because he would sleep at 3 am, he would not let me leave for Pune till late night,” he said.
