Seema Sharma, 37, has made Pune proud by successfully completing the ‘Save Antarctic’ expedition with none other than Sir Robert Swan, who has the distinction of walking to both the Poles. Sharma called the trip an ‘eye-opener’ and underlined the importance of using renewable energy and recycling.

Sharma, who finished the International Antarctic Expedition 2013 on March 13 and has returned back home, feels that waste management is a growing concern in the city. The rise in throwing of garbage on the roads has started affecting the health and hygiene of the city.

She said that it is high time that Punekars learn and understand the importance of segregating wet and dry waste.

The expedition was held between February 28 and March 13 and 80 members from 20 nations were part of the expedition.

Talking about the effect of global warming on Antarctica, Sharma said, “The experience was an eye-opener for me. Hiking on glaciers and drinking glacial water as well as camping on the cold ice was worth a lifetime experience for me. It was breathtaking to see the penguins, albatrosses, leopard seals, Orca whales and polar bears plunge into freezing water. I am keenly looking forward to working with the youth on environmental awareness projects as this expedition has been my best guide.”

A science teacher from Vidya Valley School, Sharma said that due to her profession her interests, passions would automatically be passed on to her students. Sharma further added, “Melting ice caps could actually speed up global warming. So, loss of ice sheets might mean that melting could accelerate in the future. That would be a major problem as it would cause loss of habitat and impact the ocean currents, leading to significant rise in the sea levels over a period of time.”

Talking about the plans as to how she will spread awareness, Sharma added, “Society on a whole should be more responsible. I am planning to hold workshops and seminars and tell people about global warming and what we can do to save the Antarctica. As an environment coordinator of my school, I can automatically reach out to the students. If we leave a mark on the young mindset, they will become responsible citizens of the country.”
