The institution we’re talking about on Tuesday is the third oldest educational institution in the country, and has been held in high esteem in the field of academics across India. The Deccan College, now a deemed university, is a well-known place for research in the fields of Archaeology, Linguistics and Sanskrit.

The college was established in 1821, and was known by many different names, until it was renamed as Deccan College in 1864. Not just its name, the college also changed locations numerous times in the 19th century, moving from its original location in Vishrambaug Wada, to Wanowrie and then, to its current location in Yerwada.

Currently, the Archaeology wing of the college has taken up various excavation projects in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat (Kutch), Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu (Chennai). In Madhya Pradesh, the college is attempting to decipher the exact date of the Indian civilization. “We have found some references there, which date back to the Stone Age. So, we are trying to find out if our civilization was older than the African one,” said deputy director of the college, Vasant Shinde. He added, “Similarly, in Maharashtra, we are excavating early historic sites in Vidharbha, Marathwada, Konkan and Junnar. In Konkan, a few new forts have been found and we’re analysing the tools and civilization that existed there.”

In the Sanskrit department, the college is currently working on a Sanskrit dictionary. Besides that, a state-of-the-art museum is also coming up in the campus. This museum would be an interactive one, where common people will be able to get their queries answered. Meanwhile, the Linguistic department of the college has a well-equipped, interactive language laboratory, which is used to complement classroom teaching in Phonetics and Applied Linguistics, and also in short-term courses conducted by the department.
