Kaustubh Diwegaonkar stood first in the state and ranked 15th in the all-India merit list of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, results of which were declared on Friday.

Kshipra Agre stood first among the girls in the state with an all- India ranking of 29. However, the examination cadre of Mayur Dixit, who ranked 11th in the country could not be ascertained till late night.  The mains examination was held in October 2012 while interviews were conducted in March-April 2013.

The is probably the first time when over 80 candidates from Maharashtra have cleared the UPSC examination. The result has contradicted the allegations that youth from Maharashtra do not go for the civil services.

Hailing from Latur, Kaustubh and Kshipra focused more on self studies and took coaching from Unique Academy in Pune. Kaustubh has done MA in Marathi while Kshipra completed her engineering from College of Engineering Pune.

Founder chairman of Chanakya Mandal IAS (retd) Avinash Dharmadhikari said, “There was no novelty in this year’s examination, but from 2013, the examination will be more tough.

It will have only one optional subject as against two. Besides, there would be two papers of general science totaling 1,000 marks. The examination will now be of 1,750 marks.

Dharmadhikari said, “Three new exclusive topics ethics, moral integrity and aptitude has been added.”

This year, as per UPSC, a total number of 998 candidates have been recommended for appointment including 457 general (including 23 physically challenged candidates), 295 other backward class (including 9 physically challenged candidates), 169 scheduled castes (including 2 physically challenged candidates) and 77 scheduled tribes candidates against 1,091 vacancies ( 550 general, 295 other backward class, 169 scheduled castes and 77 scheduled tribes).

About 30 candidates from Dnyan Prabodhini UPSC coaching classes received all-India ranking, 15 from Chanakya Mandal while over 10 from Unique Academy.
