50,000 autos threaten to strike on Aug 15

Pune: Auto rickshaw commuters in the city are likely to face hardships as the 'Rickshaw Panchayat', a federation of auto rickshaw owners and drivers has threatened to go on state wide strike from August 15. They want their demands related to setting up of a welfare board, ceiling of 10 school students to ferry in one rickshaw, revision in distributing permits and cancellation of scrapping old autos addressed. The strike threat virtually translates to 50,000 auto rickshaws in Pune and PCMC area which will be off the road.


The Federation maintained that the for the past few months, the representatives of rickshaw panchayat have been in contact with the state government; however the state government failed to address the issue. With the assembly election around the corner, the representatives of the panchayat claims that they will have to start everything from scratch once the new government.
Convenor of Rickshaw Panchayat, Nitin Pawar said, "The state government has failed to address the issue. We have therefore decided to give an eight days ultimatum to them and will conduct marathon seminars across the state and appeal to all the unions to participate in the strike."


Pawar added, "We want a welfare board for the auto rickshaw drivers which will include medical insurance and pension for the drivers. We want 10 school children allowed in an auto from existing ceiling of six. New permit to auto rickshaw drivers should be given on seniority basis instead of the current lottery system," he said.
Pawar further added, "The state government should withdraw its decision of scrapping auto rickshaws which are more than 20 years old. For the last 12 months they have only given us assurances and if they fail to take any concrete step then over six lakh auto rickshaws across the state, including 50,000 auto rickshaws in Pune and PCMC will be off the road from August 15."
