5 chain snatchers held; ornaments worth `21L seized

Pune: The crime branch of city police has busted another gang of chain snatchers and arrested five persons from Chinchwad who were involved in 22 chain snatching incidents. The cops of have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 21 lakh from them.
The arrested gang members have been identified as Mohammad Firoz Khan alias Irani (19), resident of Patil Estate; Hyderali Abbasali Siya (25), a resident of Sayyed Nagar, Hadapsar; Roshan Ali Javed Ali Shaikh (19) hails from Parli in Beed, and Khamar Ali Firoz Ali Shaikh (20), Mohsin Yusuf Khan (24), both residents of Papanagar, Jalgaon. The police have seized two high-speed bikes, a knife, a mobile handset and cash from them. 
Assistant commissioner of police (Crime branch) Rajendra Bhambare said, “The entire crime branch is working on some strong leads related to six more chain snatching gangs in the city. This gang is invovled in 22 chain snatching cases from beginning of this year which include three cases each in Warje, Nigdi, Kothrud, Yerwada, two in Sangvi, and one in Chatuhhringi, Cantonment, Vishrantwadi, Chinchwad, Market Yard , MIDC and Vimannagar police stations.
Inspector (Crime branch unit III) Sunil Pawar said, “The gang’s modus operandi was to target women and under the pretext of asking them address and after gaining their attention they used to pinpoint a house and when the woman turned they used to snatch the chain and fled away. The gang is active in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. One of the members Mohammad has the past criminal record. He had formed his own gang. They had a target of three chain-snatchings in a day and after this they would distribute the booty among themselves. They would sell the ornaments to a Kolhapur-based jeweller.”
