3 warkaris killed, 32 hurt as mini-truck falls into ghat

Mishap took place near Uruli Kanchan, 35 km from Pune; injured admitted to hospital

Three persons were killed and 32 injured in an accident at Shindawane ghat near Uruli Kanchan, about 35 km from Pune. The incident took place on Monday at 11.30 am when the driver of a mini-truck lost control over it and the vehicle fell in the 300-feet deep ghat section.

Two men and a woman were killed in the mishap. The Loni Kalbhor police were able to identify only one deceased, Ram Krishna Raut (65), resident of Devadi village in Akola district. The two women are yet to be identified.

It took more than 30 minutes for ambulances to reach the spot. In the meanwhile, the local residents rescued the injured people, after which they were rushed to Noble Hospital in Hadapsar.

Navnath Kalathe (28), a security guard at Purandar water pumping station, said, “I was drinking tea when I heard a loud noise. I rushed to the spot and saw that a mini-truck had fallen into the ghat. I stopped passers-by and requested them to inform the people living in the nearby areas.
“In 15 minutes, more than 200 people came to rescue the injured people,” he added.

Senior police inspector of Loni Karbhor police station, Ashok Kshirsagar said, “This group of warkaris is from Devadi village in Akola district. They were on their way from Pandharpur to Alandi. More than 42 people were travelling in the mini-truck when the accident took place.”

Kshirsagar added, “More than six people received serious injuries. We are still taking details of relatives from those injured who are able to give details. We have called up the relatives and informed them about the accident.”

Most of the injured were unable to figure out how the accident took place. They are in a state of shock and searching for their dear ones.

Shakuntala Hari Narayan (55) said,”All of a sudden the mini-truck turned turtle. I was unable to figure what happened. By the time I came to, I was in a pool of blood and people were taking me up from the ghat.”

Vimla Balakrishna Patole (50) said, “After the mini-truck turned turtle, more than four persons landed on top of me. When people tried to take me out of the truck, I got hurt on my neck and collar bone.”
